They call it “A Natural Wonder of the Volcanic Earth.” The water is filled with silica, algae, and minerals and has healing and rejuvenating powers. Real talk. The water isn’t that deep, im 5’3” and I could stand perfectly everywhere we went in the giant lagoon. The Lagoon is HUGE so even with all of the thousands of people there, there is plenty of room. Some spots are warmer than others so find a spot where you’re comfortable or just go explore!
Booking:
Booking was super easy, I did it directly on the Blue Lagoon Website. I went on a Friday at 9 AM with the thought process being that I’d relax there all day (and I did). Some people choose to go at night, but the day time was just as fun. I paid for transportation to and from our hotel (which can be done right on their site) and they will ask you to pick a time that you want to come home. You can stay as long as you’d like and you are not restricted to stay until the time you picked. We actually ended up leaving an hour earlier than our “planned time.” Just tell the desk as you’re checking out and they will schedule you for next bus going back to your town.
They give you 3 options when booking- Comfort, Premium, or Luxury. I went for the Premium but honestly, if I could do it again, I’d just stick with the Comfort. The only difference between the two is that you get a second face mask (Unnecessary. One face mask is enough and if you really really want a second one I’m pretty sure you can go back up and get more and they wouldn’t even notice), “slippers” which are flip flops and you can just bring your own, and a bath robe which is also unnecessary because you can use as many towels as you need. Don’t ask me about the Luxury option because that was just never an option for me LOL.
What To Bring:
I dressed warm for my travels (sweatpants, long sleeve shirt, inter jacket, snow boots, hat.)
I also brought a backpack that had flip flops, my bathing suit, my wallet, a charger, a hairbrush, and a ponytail holder (you don’t want to submerge yourself in this water, it will dry out your hair) And that’s it! That’s all you have to bring, they provide the rest.

Experience From Start To Finish:
So now you know how to book and what to bring, but what can you expect when you get there? When you show up you wait on line. They organize it based on which option you choose, just read the sign and stand in that line. Rocket science advice, I know. The line moves quick, I stood there for under 5 minutes.
When you get to the front they 1. check your voucher (I had mine screen shotted on my phone but you can print it if you have that kind of access) 2. Run your credit card and give you a wrist band connected to your card- this is how you purchase anything at the Lagoon so you do not have to worry about bringing your wallet in and 3. Give you your robe and slippers if you got the Premium package.
Next, you enter the locker room where you pick an empty locker. The instructions on how to lock your locker are written on the wall and if I can figure it out, you can too. In the locker room you do whatever you gotta do before going into the Lagoon. Put your bathing suit on, use the bathroom, and they tell you to wash your body in the shower (for sanitary purposes, that way everyone going into the lagoon is nice and clean.) Someone told me to condition my hair before hand too just in case it gets wet it will be protected from the minerals, but I’d say just condition the bottom of your hair if you really want because I did my whole head and then I was COLD going outside with wet hair. Also wet hair in pictures is just not it let’s be real. Literally no reason to get your head soaking wet so don’t do it. TAKE OFF YOUR JEWELRY. The water has high levels of silica, algae, and minerals and it will ruin your jewelry.
Finally, you get into the water YAY. On your way out of the locker room you’ll see a giant basket with fresh clean towels you can take as you need. The second you use a towel or robe on your wet body the towel becomes soaking wet and cold, so you might need a new one if you’re continuously getting out of the pool and putting on a towel. I stayed in the water most of the time. I brought my phone and hat with me. Theres ledges around the whole lagoon where you can lean on and put your phone or any other belongings on if you’re tired of holding it, just be careful. Many people had those water proof cases which work well but I’m more of a YOLO person. I also dropped my hat into the water exactly 4 minutes upon entering the Lagoon and ended up not wearing it at all so there’s that.
First stop was to try and get a good picture, didn’t like any of the 300 I made my friend take of me, and decided to go straight to the bar instead. First drink is free! I got strawberry sparkling wine and it was yummmmm. I ended up getting another one later on because drinking wine and relaxing go hand in hand for me. Next stop was to get our first face mask at the face mask bar. This took us a minute because the place is huge and you can’t see that far ahead of you with all of the steam radiating from the pool but some how we found the mask bar and you will too. They give you a giant glob of a white silica face mask that you wash off right into the Lagoon after about 10 minutes. Since we got the Premium package we got a choice for our second mask later in the day. They give you options between a lava mask, an algae mask, or a mud mask. The signs will tell you what they consist of and what skin they are normally used on. I went with the lava one. The girls at the bar are knowledgeable and will help you pick one and they will suggest if you are better off washing it off with fresh water (provided right outside of the pool) or if you can wash it off with the lagoon water. See horrifying photo below of me trying to apply the mask using my phone camera because there is only one tiny mirror available. The rest of the time was spent drinking, relaxing, exploring, and of course finding the best spots for pictures. The lighting is absolute garbage in most areas so just keep it moving till you find the best spot.
There’s a restaurant and spa treatments that you can pay extra for. There is also a cafe right by the doors leading to the lagoon where you can hangout inside and get a snack. The staff are all friendly and one girl who was working there gave us a pretty useful list of things to do in Iceland. She told us all the good bars to hit and things to do during the day that you can find on my Iceland Blog Post.
When you’re ready to go just hop out of the pool, go back to the locker room, shower up and use extra conditioner (they provide it or you can bring your own) get dressed nice and comfy and check out. When you check out they’ll charge your card and take back the wrist band and tell you the next bus time.
